Everton boss Roberto Martinez does not fear burning out his youngsters ahead of Norwich clash |
ROBERTO MARTINEZ is not fearful of his swashbuckling youngsters enduring burn-out as he prepares to ask them to shoulder the burden for Everton during a packed looming schedule.
The likes of John Stones, Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu are all set to start against Norwich today and the Everton manager has no thought of resting his key performers over the coming weeks.
Everton will potentially play 11 games between now and the end of January - including three matches against Manchester City given their Capital One Cup and Premier League commitments - but Martinez believes his young guns can take the strain.
“That’s the thing about players such as Ross, Rom, Geri and John,” he said. “The players you need to be very careful about are those around the age of 28, 29, 30.
“You need to measure that really well. We have players who are those ages and we have to measure that.
“When you have players who are 21 or 22, they can recover in 12 hours, because they’ve got so much energy.
“I don’t see (burn out) as such a problem. It’s the opposite for young players with enthusiasm who are playing well.
“I think the burn out comes when you’re not playing well, and you’re forced to play with a lot of pressure and you’re carrying the expectations of a whole club to win games.
“When you’re enjoying your football, you can’t wait to play the next game.”
