Jose Mourinho (right) says Cesc Fabregas remains a kay member of Chelsea's squad |
CESC FABREGAS has received the backing of manager Jose Mourinho despite concerns the midfielder is suffering from burn-out.
The 28-year-old Spaniard has already racked up 25 games this season for club and country but has uncharacteristically been restricted to just the one goal, against Maccabi Tel Aviv nearly three months ago.
He was left out of Wednesday night’s 2-0 win against Porto when a more energised Chelsea side secured their Champions League knockout place.
And recent lacklustre performances have led to questions being raised over the Spain international’s energy levels going into a crucial and hectic period of the season.
But Mourinho said: “Last year he had a huge responsibility for the quality of our team, he was fundamental.
"This season he is at the same level as the team and it is difficult to play especially well.
“If you go player-by-player, last season - Branislav Ivanovic, Gary Cahill, John Terry - you could say were fantastic.
“This season it is more difficult to say this player is being magnificent.
"Normally players and the team have an intimate relationship.
“I don’t see Cesc differently, but what I see if that every minute the professionalism is there and he is never afraid to have the ball or to be afraid to make a mistake. I completely trust him.”
