Man Utd source refuses to deny club have agreed five-year deal with Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho is on standby to replace Louis van Gaal at Manchester United

MANCHESTER UNITED have refused to deny reports from Spain claiming they have agreed in principle a five-year contract for Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho is on the market after he was sacked as Chelsea boss last week.

And the Portuguese tactician is priced at odds-on with some bookmakers to be the next United manager as the pressure builds on Louis van Gaal.

Express Sport understands Van Gaal will be given two Christmas games - at Stoke on Boxing Day and at home to Chelsea 48 hours later - to save his job.

And United have put Mourinho on standby to take over should Van Gaal fail to halt their dismal run of six games without a win.

Spanish website Fichajes yesterday claimed Mourinho had agreed a five-year deal to replace Van Gaal.

But Red Devils chiefs have chosen not to give the Dutchman a vote of confidence and refused to deny suggestions they have teed up a contract for Mourinho.

A United club source said: "There's nothing to report here. We are just not getting involved in this."

Mourinho is prepared to accept a £4million-a-season pay cut to take over at Old Trafford.

The 52-year-old earned £10m-a-year at Stamford Bridge but is ready to take £6m-a-year in Manchester.
