JON FLANAGAN’S injury nightmare looks to be coming to an end as he played 30 minutes for Liverpool’s under-21 side.
The 22-year-old, who can play right or left back, is currently on a list of nine Liverpool players out through injury, but will now be targeting a return to the starting line-up having made it through half an hour of football unscathed.
With Joe Gomez and Martin Skrtel already out, Flanagan’s return will be a welcome boost for Jurgen Klopp as they enter the New Year targeting Champions League qualification.
Flanagan broke into the first team under former boss Brendan Rodgers, making 25 appearances in the 2013/14 season.
He was subsequently named as a standby player for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, having made his England debut in a warm-up game against Ecuador in the United States.
However, a build-up of fluid in his knee kept the full-back out of the whole of last season before undergoing yet another operation on a different knee problem in April 2015.
Despite his ongoing problems, Flanagan is clearly rated around Anfield, as they signed him to a contract extension so he could complete his rehabilitation and stake a claim for a place in Klopp’s side.
