Has the cure for the common cold finally been found?
Could zinc be the answer to the common cold

AS THE winter weather sets in, and more and more of us are struck down with colds and flu - we’re constantly in search of something that can cure those pesky sniffles. Could this simple ingredient be the answer?

It’s always the way, as work starts winding down, and Christmas is just around the corner, and suddenly you catch the most disgusting cough and cold combination you’ve ever experienced.
And while medicine is yet to come up with a cure-all for the common cold - the NHS has revealed picking one particular ingredient could help bring an end to your misery faster.

Years of lab research has revealed that zinc can hasten the end of a cold, meaning you’re back to being a normal nose-breathing, non-spluttering human quicker than ever.
After looking over a huge database of medical research, the study found that people who took zinc tablets showed signs of a cold for on average one to two days less than patients who didn’t.

They found that zinc seemed to be an effective treatment for colds, though admitted further research would need to be conducted in order to prove this.
But before you rush off to sweep pharmacy stands clear of this magic remedy - be advised that zinc does come with side effects.
Nausea, and an unpleasant taste in the mouth are reported by zinc consumers, and you also need to be wary of how much you take, as anymore than 25mg a day can cause anaemia and weakened bones.
Aside from taking zinc tablets, the NHS recommend getting plenty of rest, fluid and good food when you are suffering with a cold, and taking painkillers when needed.

Could zinc be the answer to our cold woes?
Dr Rupal Shah, a GP in London advises: “Try to rest, eat well, avoid stress and keep hydrated. If you have a fever, you may need extra fluids. You could also take paracetamol to treat fever and pain, or inhale steam with a decongestant in to help clear a blocked nose.”
On top of this, doctors recommend eating lots of fruit and veg, washing your hands regularly and getting plenty of sleep to stave off any nasties that might be headed your way.
Looks like we could soon see the back of colds for good!
