SAM ALLARDYCE believes Sunderland’s first away win of the season was a huge step in their bid to move out of the bottom three.
Jermain Defoe pounced in the 80th minute after a mistake by Palace’s Scott Dann and Wayne Hennessey. But Allardyce believes his side’s improved defensive display – this was only their second clean sheet of the season – was equally significant.
“It’s a massive win for us and it’s no coincidence that a zero against us got us a victory,” he said. “Our two clean sheets this season have got us six points, so it is the way to go and always has been. We frustrated the crowd and frustrated Crystal Palace and then got the goal and came away with three points, which is fantastic for us, our first away win of the season.
“It was mix-up between the keeper and the centre-half and there was Jermain to take advantage.”
The Black Cats had shipped six goals in their last away trip at Everton – but Allardyce, left, was pleased his defensive plan worked this time. He said: “Keeping the crowd quiet is hard here but we stopped the wide players and dealt with them extremely well with the five at the back.
“I just wanted the players to be solid and knew if our strikers got an opportunity we would score.”
Palace manager Alan Pardew admitted his side never got going as they suffered another home slip.
He said: “We got a lot of the ball, a lot of possession, but unfortunately we could not create a sweet moment and things went the wrong way for us.”
