Then Reds have struggled in front of goal this season, having scored just nine times in the league after 10 games.
They boasted 13 goals at this stage last season and 17 the year before that.
And the drought up front has cost the club points, with Jurgen Klopp's men drawing nine of 14 games in all competitions this campaign.
But vice-captain Milner insists his team-mates will reverse these fortunes after playing out a fourth 1-1 draw in five games against Southampton yesterday.
"We're not that far away. We've only lost two games this year, we have drawn eight of the last nine or something ridiculous like that," Milner told the Liverpool Echo.
"We feel we can perform a lot better but we're not losing the games, looking on the positive side.
"We're not a million miles away. We know we need to improve and know we can improve.
"It's going to take one game where we have a bit of luck and every shot goes in for us and we could go on a run where we are scoring three, four, five goals a game."
Liverpool face Bournemouth in the League Cup this Wednesday before a trip to Premier League champions Chelsea, who currently languish 15th in the top flight.
Christian Benteke may be back for the Bournemouth clash after recovering from a hamstring injury - although manager Klopp may rest his star striker in preparation for Chelsea.
"To get Christian back is great. The strikers we have at the club offer different things, they're a good mix, and there will be a lot of changes to the way we play," Milner added.
