Facebook is now indexing two trillion posts, statuses updates and comments across its social network |
FACEBOOK has made two trillion posts searchable in an update to the hugely popular social network.
Facebook claims its users are now making a staggering 1.5 billion searches each day – and its latest update hopes to make the process a little easier.
The US firm will now index all of its two trillion posts.
Product Manager for the Facebook search team Rousseau Kazi told The Verge: "Because we've indexed the entire world's conversations, we tell you things that are trending, things that are breaking, what's happening right now.
"The whole idea here is that if you can group these pieces of content in certain ways, it makes it pretty easy to get the full story."
Searching through the slew of text musings, photo updates, video posts, shared articles and comments that users post to Facebook each and every day is no easy task.
But Facebook believes the universal search feature could open new opportunities for users.
The news comes hours after Facebook admitted its smartphone app was responsible for battery drain amongst mobile users.
"We’re making it super easy for you to get everyone's perspective in one place about a topic that you care about," said Mr Kazi.
Facebook is clearly hoping to move users away from rival services Google and Twitter, which both excel in breaking the latest news and collating user reactions.
But unlike its two rivals, Facebook search will use an increasing number of personal data points to tailor your searches.
The US social network is bringing together two trillion posts under the new search bar |
The Californian technology giant says that every single action you've ever taken on the social network – from your friends, your conversations, frequently visited profiles, liked photographs – will inform the intelligent search.
Facebook Vice President of search Tom Stocky said: "We have to balance two things: how are the authors relevant to you and how is what they’re posting relevant to what you’re searching for."
Facebook says every single action you've taken on the social network, from who you've become friends with to every page you like, will inform the search results.
But the smart new search capabilities come with a fresh slew of privacy concerns.
Users will be able to surface comments, shared content and statuses from your time on the social network in seconds.
"We’ve been proactively reminding people who’ve they been sharing with," Mr Stocky told The Verge, when asked about the implications on the powerful new search.
You can nominate who can see your future posts on Facebook from within the social network's settings menu.
The new unified search feature brings fresh privacy concerns |
The social network also allows users to retroactively change the audience who can access your posts.
To change who can see – or search – your past posts simply find the post and open the menu in the upper right corner.
From the drop-down menu which appears, choose which groups of people you want to be able to see the post.
There is no new name or brand change to mark the improvements to Facebook universal search.
Facebook users can simply use the standard search bar to trawl through trillions of public posts from across the 1.49 billion monthly active users.
The feature will become available to iOS, Android and desktop users over the coming days.
