Sir Geoff Hurst believes it will be a struggle to catch Wayne Rooney as top England goalscorer

SIR GEOFF HURST reckons it will be a struggle for anyone to catch Wayne Rooney as top England goalscorer.

The Manchester United forward will beat Sir Bobby Charlton's Three Lions record of 49 if he can manage two more when England play San Marino and Switzerland in the next week.
Hurst also believes any criticism of Rooney's start to the campaign is unfair and reckons the 29-year-old's style of play makes him one of few modern men who could compete in the more volatile 1960s.

"The criticism is unjust," said Hurst. "He's not lost his pace, skill, endeavour or willingness. He's going to beat the record.
"Can he steer clear of injuries? If he does he could set a record that could be held for a very long time.
"He could get another 15 goals in three or four years. He's a streetfighter and would quite comfortably fit into our era. Some other players would find that difficult to play in the Sixties."
