David De Gea has been warned by Spain manager Vicente del Bosque to get back in the Man United squad |
DAVID DE GEA received support from his Spanish team-mates yesterday after his collapsed transfer to Real Madrid – but a warning from his international manager.
Spain boss Vicente del Bosque said De Gea has to get his head right and win back his starting place for Manchester United if he is to stay in his plans for Euro 2016 and have any hope of displacing veteran No1 Iker Casillas.
That note of caution will be welcomed by United manager Louis van Gaal as he attempts to reintegrate a goalkeeper deemed too unsettled to play in the first six matches of the domestic season.
Ahead of Spain's qualifiers against Slovakia on Saturday and Macedonia next Tuesday, Del Bosque said: "He needs to be professional and move on from this episode.
"I hope that he starts playing again and is happy, and if he plays well we can bring him along, otherwise if he doesn't play it will be very difficult for him to go to the Euros."
When asked if he would counsel De Gea about his situation at Old Trafford, Del Bosque added: "No, but if I do feel the need to talk to him about it then I will say something."
United colleagues Juan Mata and Ander Herrera, and Real captain Sergio Ramos have rallied round De Gea by saying he has the character to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on his dream move.
Mata insists there will be no backlash from United fans or any resentment from the rest of the Van Gaal's squad, who will welcome him back into the fold after his transfer deadline day fiasco. And he believes he will re-establish himself as United's No 1.
"David is professional and he always will be," he said. "His desire and professionalism will remain intact. Any team in the world would be better off with him in it.
"The fans always support the team, all of us, and they will support him. These have been difficult days but he is OK.
"He seems the same as ever to me. He's calm, relaxed. He has a naturally calm personality. It is good for him to be here with the national team too. I think his personality will help. He is always calm.
"Even in moments of maximum pressure or stress he still plays well. His personality will help him on and off the pitch.
"He is a friend and he is very professional. I wish him the best and I am sure he will be fine. He will manage the situation."
Herrera said De Gea, United's player of the year for the past two seasons, has always been professional in his behaviour throughout the summer-long saga.
He said: "David is my friend and I want the best for him. He has had a very, very good four years for United and he will do it again.
"He is a very good professional, you can see that every day, he never missed one training session, he never missed one game. So I think he is going to do it again.
"For me, he is the best goalkeeper in the world and I think many people think the same. We are happy as a team to have him with us and as a friend I am happy also."
Ramos, who was the subject of a failed transfer bid from United this summer, said: "I have not talked to David and do not know his opinion, but life goes on.
"Nobody has died for this. He must maintain his level, he is one of the best keepers.
"The world of football and signings is like this. Everyone tries to get the most and this is never easy for any player.
"He has had a bumpy summer because he has decided his future and that of his family. But it is something we have to go through at times, everyone has to understand the facts and do their best wherever they are."
Van Gaal will have clear-the-air talks with De Gea when he returns from international duty next week and if he is convinced he is in the right frame of mind he could be recalled for the home match against Liverpool a week on Saturday.
