Dimitar Berbatov signed for PAOK after Manchester United reportedly turned him down |
MANCHESTER UNITED rejected the chance to re-sign Dimitar Berbatov in the summer, according to reports
Daily Mirror claim Berbatov offered his services before signing for PAOK to help ease the well-documented striker crisis at Old Trafford.
Prior to splashing out £36million on Anthony Martial on transfer deadline day, manager Louis van Gaal had just two recognised strikers at the club.
Reports suggest the former United star was keen to help out but the club opted against a sensational reunion because of concerns over the 34-year-old's fitness.
Berbatov originally signed for the club from Tottenham in 2008 in a deal worth a reported £30.75million.
Berbatov scored a famous hat-trick for United against Liverpool in 2010 |
In four seasons at Old Trafford he scored 56 goals in 149 appearances in all competitions.
Still highly regarded in Manchester, his most memorable moment in a United shirt came when he scored all three goals in a 3-2 win over fiercest rivals Liverpool in 2010.
Before his move to Greece this summer, interest in Bulgaria's record goalscorer remained high, with Aston Villa and Bournemouth both thought to retain an interest.
