Diego Costa is serving a three-game ban for his bust-up with Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny |
JOSE MOURINHO insists Chelsea would be in a shocking state if he had a team of 11 Diego Costas.
On Monday, the Blues boss could not resist another dig at the FA for their treatment of his star striker.
Costa has served two matches out of his three-game ban for his bust-up with Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny.
But he has praised the Spain international for his commitment. But with Costa set to return in the Champions League tonight in Porto, the Portuguese coach insisted his team would be in a disastrous state if all his players were like the Brazil-born ace.
“I think we would lose every game because the desire to suspend him is so big we wouldn't have players to start the game!” he said. “So I'm happy we have only one and let him play until they decide to suspend him again.”
Despite his support for Costa, Mourinho was adamant there is currently not one player who is an ‘Untouchable’ in his squad, with the west Londoners lying sixth from bottom in the Premier League.
“To be untouchable you have to be consistent,” he added. “To be untouchable you have to be a fantastic player, but you have to be consistent.
“At this moment we have fantastic players. Players who gave us the title last season – and no doubts about it – but football is about today, not about yesterday.
“In football you have to be consistent in your performance and emotion. To be a winner you don't need to be a winner all the time.
“To be a winner you must have a strong mentality every game, every day. At this moment I don't have untouchables.
“I have very good players, players I like very much. I like my squad, their qualities as players and their human qualities. It's a privilege to work with such a group. But untouchables in football, only consistency can give you that step.”
Mourinho led Porto to victory in the Champions League in 2004 and he checked out a statue of him in the club’s museum on Monday night.
“I am part of the history, and that softens my heart a bit,” he said. “But I'm not here as a Porto fan. I'm going to make my heart hard tomorrow.”
