Today is Independence Day in Uruguay, celebrating the country’s independence from the Brazilian Empire on August 25, 1825.
1. Uruguay is the only country whose name in English contains the same letter three times in its first five letters.
2. The population of Uruguay is 3.4 million which is the same as the population of Berlin and slightly larger than that of Wales.
3. The official name of Uruguay is “Republica Oriental del Uruguay” (Oriental Republic of Uruguay).
4. The country is named after the River Uruguay.
5. It is not known whether the river is named after a bird called the “urú” in the regional Guarani language or a river snail called “uruguá”.
6. The only Olympic gold medals ever won by Uruguay were both for football, in 1924 and 1928.
