Tamzin reveals that her nickname is 'Glamzin', originally from a newspaper headline |
NEW Tricks and former EastEnders star Tamzin, 44, lives in London with her daughters Florence, seven, and three-year-old Marnie.
Not a lot of people know this but I’m very good at… tapestry and upholstering. I actually did an upholstery course a little while ago and have a brand-new sewing machine with my name on it, ready to start tearing apart the soft furnishings in my house. I love nice fabrics and texture like velvet and silk, and have a special Moroccan corner in my house to curl up and read in.
My best friend is… I’m very lucky to have lots of different people in my life who I’d consider a best friend, so I couldn’t possibly choose. My best friends from New Tricks would have to be my three Ls – (Denis) Lawson, (Nicholas) Lyndhurst and (Larry) Lamb, who let me finish their leftovers every lunchtime.
My nickname is… Glamzin. My friend gave it to me after a headline in a newspaper that said “Glamzin does it again”, so it’s stuck with me since then.
The bravest thing I’ve ever done is… move out of my parents’ house at 16. I moved in with a group of friends and my first bed was a bunk bed I shared with a friend.
My favourite TV show is… The Trip starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon – they star as fictionalised versions of themselves and go off on restaurant tours. They do an amazing set of impressions of Michael Caine and Sean Connery, which is so funny.
My perfect evening is… at home, cooking a big barbecue in the garden with all my friends and family over and just chilling out, followed by dancing around the kitchen with the girls.
I’d like to say sorry to… my parents for being a horrible teenager. I was just your typical teen, desperate for independence, thinking I knew the answers to everything – which of course I did!
My first kiss was… at a youth club disco in Ilford, Essex, with a boy called Gerrard. I was 13 and he was a boy from the neighbouring school.
My biggest regret is… not learning Italian. I have Italian heritage, so I’m keen to go over for a few months with the girls and soak up the culture and the food. I’d like us all to learn Italian together as a family – it’s something I’ve been saying for years.
The one thing I’d change about myself is… my lack of ability to play a musical instrument. I’d love to play piano and the guitar. My eldest plays piano and brought tears to my eyes at her last concert.

The best thing my parents taught me was… to love unconditionally.
The last time I cried was… at my daughter’s piano concert. She’s just started to learn and has a great feel for it.
The first record I ever bought was… I’m In The Mood For Dancing by the Nolan Sisters, which me and the girls obviously put on to dance around the kitchen to.
It’s not good for my image but I like… Sofia The First, which is a kids’ cartoon about a little princess who goes on adventures, can talk to animals, can summon the other little Disney princesses to help her and sings beautifully.
My greatest weakness is… Cheese. I love any type of cheese, preferably on a large board with a glass of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
If I could pass any law I would… make everyone skip everywhere.
I drive… an Alfa Romeo Giulietta. It drives beautifully and I remember Jeremy Clarkson once saying, “If you love cars, you have to one day drive an Alfa.”
The shop I can’t walk past is… Marks & Spencer for food, underwear, kids’ clothes – pretty much everything. It’s stood the test of time – it was my nan’s favourite shop and now it’s mine.
The most expensive thing I’ve ever splashed out on is… a house. But I love it – it’s a huge part of my life and the centre of mine and the girls’ universe, full of love, warmth and laughter. It’s full of personality, too – some rooms are quite neutral, but others are overflowing with lots of bits and bobs from my travels.
My perfect Sunday is… friends and family around my house. All of us in the garden on a beautiful summer’s day and I’d cook lunch for everyone from scratch. The adults could lounge about with nice wine, while the kids run about the garden.
My favourite place in Britain is… London for the culture, the architecture, the people – too many things to list. We filmed the whole series of New Tricks around the city and got to see it from a different perspective. You can find new hidden gems every day.
My last holiday was… at the Slimmeria Retreat in East Sussex. I was on a detox weekend – no sugar, no caffeine, no alcohol, no dairy. We went on lots of long walks, did boxing and yoga, and relaxed as well. I came back feeling revitalised.
I’m currently reading… If You Feel Too Much: Thoughts On Things Found And Lost And Hoped For by Jamie Tworkowski, which is a beautiful collection of essays exploring hope, wonder and what it means to be human.
The best day of my life was… when my daughters were born.
If I had half an hour left on Earth… I’d dance around the kitchen with my kids to everything from Bob Marley to Disney classics.
Tamzin stars in New Tricks on BBC1 at 9pm on Tuesday.
