The new Star Wars Battlefront: Fighter Squadron Mode |
Electronic Arts comes to Gamescom to showcase such titles as FIFA 16, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Need for Speed, Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2, Star Wars Battlefront, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Unravel, and maybe even Mass Effect 4, Andromeda.
UPDATE FOUR: FIFA 16 is set to get a new game mode, FUT Draft, in a bid to expand on the popular Ultimate Team online multiplayer feature.
Fans must Draft a squad and challenge opponents in a series of up to four matches to win big rewards for their club, including the choice of captain, the 23-man layout and what formation to adopt.
"Once you’re ready, it’s time to take your squad to the pitch and challenge opponents to compete in a four-match series.
"You can compete in single player or online against opponents across the globe. As you progress, you’ll earn better rewards, including coins, packs, and more. Win four matches in a row to earn the best rewards possible.
"A FUT Draft series has an entry fee of 15,000 coins, 300 FIFA Points, or 1 Draft Token (available in FUT packs). Even if you lose your first match you’ll still receive a reward that matches the value of the entrance fee. The further you progress, the better rewards you get."
UPDATE THREE: The new Star Wars Battlefront: Fighter Squadron Mode Gameplay Trailer was revealed at Gamescom, showing iconic ships from the films doing battle against the Empire.
"For fans of the epic Star Wars scenes with Rebel and Imperial ships facing off in intense dogfights, Fighter Squadron is the ultimate Star Wars Battlefront™ game mode.
"Now, you can witness this airborne action in the Fighter Squadron gameplay trailer. Stick around to the end. You’ll find it’s full of surprises.
"Featuring iconic Rebel X-Wings and A-Wings, as well as the dreaded Imperial Tie Fighters and Tie Interceptors, Fighter Squadron lets you engage in aerial battles with up to 20 players, and AI-controlled ships joining the fight."
Unravel, the upcoming physics-based puzzle platform game, was shown off by developers Coldwood Interactive during the EA Gamescom event.
Martin Sahlin hit the stage to reveal more about the upcoming title, which was first announced EA's E3 2015 conference.
"Being made from yarn is both a weakness and a strength. The yarn can be fragile, or get tangled, or you could run out entirely.
"But just like the bond it represents, it can also be incredibly strong, and it enables you to do really great things – reaching out, climbing, swinging, connecting, making bridges, or launching Yarny high up in the air – and for more complex puzzles, you’ll have to use all of these abilities together.
"The puzzles are all physics based, so how you choose to tackle things is really up to you, and your creativity."
The new gameplay footage from Unravel was shown off ahead of Star Wars Battlefront's big reveal.
UPDATE TWO: Mirror's Edge Catalyst has been given a release date of February 23, 2016 during today's EA press briefing at Gamescom.
"In this first Mirror’s Edge Catalyst gameplay trailer, experience the moment where Faith begins her rise from a carefree runner to the hero the city needs. Playing in first person allows players to feel her fluid movement, combat and power.
"At the beginning of the game, Faith is released from juvenile detention, and her long-time mentor, Noah, has welcomed her back to the Runner's lair. He now trusts Faith enough to give her a true Runner's job. She is tasked to break into the Elysium building in the Downtown district to find a terminal where she can get access to important information. However, things don't go as planned as Gabriel Kruger makes an unannounced visit to the facility."
You can check out the new trailer below, showing Faith going on an ill-fated run that ends with her finding out some terrible new secrets.
UPDATE ONE: Fans can help build a new car inspired by Need for Speed by customising a vehicle online so EA can build it for real and show it off in Las Vegas at a later date.
Need for Speed's Ventura Bay will be home to real-world automotive icons, EA revealed today.
They are considered heroes of today's car culture which will guide you in the game and help build reputation and earn their respect on your journey to become the ultimate icon.
Speed, Style, Build, Crew, and Outlaw will be the new ways to play Need for Speed, all inspired by the five Icons.
The icons include:
- Magnus Walker, the king of speed.
- Master of style, Ken Block
- Nakai-san, the godfather of car modification
- Outlaw, Morohoshi-san
- Get to grips in close proximity driving with Risky Devil
"Throughout your journey you’ll also come across other real-world stars of car culture within the different stories, adding a richness and level of authenticity to your Need for Speed experience.
"This group of friends and the icons themselves will encourage and inspire you to carve your own path to become the ultimate icon."
The briefing is to be hosted by EA CEO Andrew Wilson and will include new trailers for Mirror’s Edge Catalyst and Battlefront 3, which were both teased in the build up to the show.
There hasn't been any official word on whether Mass Effect: Andromeda will make an appearance but it would seem likely that there could be a new teaser dropped for eager fans.

EA have also been busy teasing Mirror's Edge fans with more details on the action adventure title.
“Playing in first-person is integral to Mirror’s Edge,” Design Director, Erik Odeldahl revealed.
“At its core, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst is about putting you in the shoes of a Runner and letting you live Faith’s story.
"She progresses from doing her job on the rooftops of Glass, to becoming a person that realizes she has the power to change things for the better for everyone.
"Seeing the world through Faith’s eyes and using her hands to interact with it is something we believe is absolutely necessary.”
Mirror's Edge Catalyst is a prequel to 2008's Mirror's Edge revolving around Faith's past.
