PHOTOS of a dog buried alive up to its head in France have sparked an outpouring of anger on social media.
The French mastiff was discovered by Pedro Dinis, who was walking his dog on waste ground in Carrieres-sur-Seine, west of Paris.
The photos posted by Mr Dinis have already been shared over 150,000 times. Dominic Berger, the general secretary of the Animal Defence Association in France, said: "It's horrible. There are no words. "If you no longer want your pet, there are people who can put them in centres…But this is pure sadism. "How could someone do such a thing? It's impossible. "One thing is certain, someone who is capable of doing such a thing poses a problem for our society. "Unfortuantely, it's not an uncommon incident. We find dogs who have been buried half alive or hung." An online petition already has over 300,000 signatures calling for the man to be punished to the maximum degree.
When his dog started acting strangely, Mr Dinis discovered the animal surrounded by stones with her lead attached to a sack of gravel to prevent her breaking free from the earth.
Mr Dinis posted shocking photos on Facebook saying: "Only her head was visible and it was difficult to see given the amount of earth covering her."
He rang emergency services who rushed the "shocked and dehydrated" dog to the vet.
The police quickly traced and arrested the dog's 21-year-old owner, who denied burying the mastiff and claimed it had run away.
"The dog is more than 10 years old and suffers from arthritis. It's difficult to imagine her running away," said a source close to the investigation.
The owner will be put on trial for animal cruelty and could be sent to prison for two years and be forced to pay a fine of up to 30,000 euros (£21,000).
