Aguero scooped low to head beyond Joel Robles from Kevin de Bruyne's whipped delivery to make it 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
De Bruyne had earlier controversially levelled the aggregate score with a cool finish from Raheem Sterling's cross.</div>

Sterling delivered the ball after it had gone out although the referee didn't see it and the goal stood.</div>

Everton had taken the lead through Ross Barkley to go 3-1 up on aggregate after 18 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He drove through a non-existent defence and finished well beyond Willy Caballero.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fernandinho equalised with a deflected effort six minutes later to make it 1-1 at half time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then De Bruyne and Aguero saw City through - they play Liverpool who beat Stoke on penalties last night.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was bad news for City late on though as De Bruyne was taken off on a stretcher after a nasty looking injury.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His dreams of a Wembley final, of leading Liverpool to silverware next month, remain intact, but only after his side survived one of those nerve-ridden, dramatic nights that are increasingly part of their fabric.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, so often the villain, produced heroics to deny Peter Crouch and Marc Muniesa and then substitute Joe Allen stepped up to strike the winning penalty, with Klopp sat at the back of the dug-out.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For Stoke there was only regret; their hopes of a first appearance in the League Cup final since 1972 falling agonisingly short after Marko Arnautovic’s controversial goal had initially succeeded in prolonged their interest in the competition by wiping out the first-leg deficit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The visitors served note of their intention to shrug off the weight of history by taking their battle for a place in the final to extra-time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Liverpool struggled to build on the advantage Jordon Ibe’s first leg goal had brought them to leave Jurgen Klopp’s hopes of reaching Wembley next month on a knife-edge after another flimsy display at Anfield.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The change in approach by Hughes, both Crouch and Jon Walters were included, was unashamedly implemented with a nod and wink towards Liverpool’s deficiencies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And why not? Klopp pompously claimed on TV before kick-off that it “seems to be a heading festival,” yet when he selects mobile forwards to pull more cumbersome defenders out of position he is merely adopting a different approach towards the same end result.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The irony that the goal which changed the complexion of the tie in first-half stoppage time resulted from a flowing move will not be lost on the visitors.Stoke, to a man, had failed to turn up at The Britannia and conjured more threat here than they had managed in 90 minutes on home soil.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That the first opportunity mid-way through the half arrived from a long ball was no surprise, but Klopp should be unhappy that Mamadou Sakho allowed Erik Pieters’ pumped pass from left-back position to sail over his head where Walters swooped.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A left-foot shot from the right hand side of the penalty area went across the face of goal on an evening when every chance felt crucial given how few clear cut opportunities there were.</div>

The next one they took, albeit by virtue of a slice of good fortune. Walters and Bojan twice swapped passes in the build and when Bojan delivered a cute cross Arnautovic tucked home from eight yards.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Replays showed he was offside, but with the assistant linesman lagging behind due to the speed of the attack the effort stood.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Liverpool had drawn energy from Klopp’s presence on the touchline, and the noisy tumult emanating from the stands, but, at times, it felt as if they were playing with their hearts rather than their heads. The quality suffered as a result.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Emre Can sent a rasping 25-yard drive narrowly wide of Jack Butland’s right-hand post and Jordan Henderson attempted a volley from further out.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yet the late twist at the end of the half condemned both sides to face a test of their nerve as well as talent. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That Stoke’s inability to deal with a corner so nearly handed the initiative straight back immediately following the restart merely added to the frenzy.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Crouch failed to clear properly and when Henderson found Roberto Firmino his low shot was blocked smartly by the out-stretched left boot of Butland at his post.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yet the siege was laid to Simon Mignolet’s goal with Stoke seeking another goal to make certain of their first win here since March 1959. Sakho twice blocked bravely from Walters as he looked to get shots off and Liverpool continued to find themselves chasing the ball rather than controlling it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The introduction of Christian Benteke for the limping Henderson offered the hosts their own aerial presence and yet they continued to make life difficult for themselves.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Belgium striker missed Alberto Moreno’s cross and when the ball fell to Jon Flanagan, who was making his first start since May 2014 due to a serious knee injury, he was quickly crowded out. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But the Belgian striker limped off immediately afterwards to give the Goodison Park faithful a serious headache about his availability going forward.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ramiro Funes Mori had given Roberto Martinez's side the lead in the first-half stoppage time as he followed up after Willy Caballero could only parry a shot from outside the box.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Manuel Pellegrini, who had started Fabien Delph in an effort to give Yaya Toure greater freedom further up the pitch, withdrew the former Aston Villa midfielder just after half-time and replaced him with Spanish winger Jesus Navas.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And while initially Everton looked rampant as Gerard Delofeu and Ross Barkley peppered the box with slide rule passes and fizzing crosses, City slowly edged their way back into the game.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And they were eventually level, Navas finishing off a lightning-fast counter-attacking move from the away side after Sergio Aguero had played him in down the left-hand side.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, Everton had the last laugh; Gareth Barry picking out Lukaku with a perfectly weighted cross which found the striker for in an onside position for what felt like the first time in the game, and he nodded past a helpless Caballero.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He barely had the time to celebrate though when pain in his ankle stopped him running away to the fans, and he was substituted so that Everton will take a lead but not necessarily their top-scorer back to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
WAYNE ROONEY'S wobbling confidence received another hefty blow at Old Trafford last night as Manchester United crashed out of the Capital One Cup on penalties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The United captain took on the responsibility of dispatching United’s first spot-kick after 120 minutes had failed to produce a goal, only to see his well-struck shot saved by Middlesbrough keeper Tomas Mejias.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Michael Carrick and Ashley Young also crumbled under the pressure, with Carrick blazing over and Young having his penalty saved.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Boro captain Grant Leadbitter, Stewart Downing and Ben Gibson buried theirs as the Championship side booked their place in the quarter-finals at home against Everton.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a match that started slowly and built to a tense and exciting encounter as the second half progressed, both sides had chances to win it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">rouane Fellaini went close to giving the hosts the lead but his header went just wide of a post</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But United were frustrated by a resilient Boro, with Louis van Gaal bringing on Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial to no avail as the tie became increasingly fraught.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
United manager Van Gaal had refused to listen to the warning from Hillsborough on Tuesday of the danger of fielding an under-strength side, refreshing his team with nine players who had not started in the derby draw with City last Sunday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But with promising midfielder Andreas Pereira, as well as Carrick and Daley Blind, he was bringing in both experience and quality.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Boro themselves fielded five changes from the side who had beaten Wolves away at the weekend as Aitor Karanka also rang the changes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The only thing to light up Old Trafford early on was the 10,0000 Boro supporters, shining the lights on their mobile phones in a coordinated protest at recent job losses in the steel industry.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
United looked the more composed, but it was the visitors that forced the first real chance of the game on 17 minutes. A goalmouth scramble saw Emilio Nsue’s overhead effort fall to George Friend at the far post, but he pushed it wide when he should have found the net.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That proved the wake-up call for United, who became more of a threat. Much of that menace came from the speed of Jesse Lingard and the physicality of Marouane Fellaini. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Towards the end of a forgettable first half, James Wilson forced the first save of the match from Meijas, a gentle block at his near post after Wilson had been set up by Fellaini. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fellaini himself had a great chance to put United ahead after wrong-footing Boro centre-half Gibson and knocking the ball over his head, but Friend atoned for his earlier miss with a diving block.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Downing went close to putting the Championship side in front with a dipping effort from 25 yards minute later that Sergio Romero did brilliantly to tip over the bar. Parity at half-time was fair on the balance of play.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
That, however, was not a view Van Gaal was prepared to accept and the Dutchman lost patience with an ineffectual performance from Wilson and brought on Rooney.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The striker provided an immediate spark but it was Memphis Depay who almost forced a mistake from Mejias, the Boro keeper nearly spilling a regulation block from a scuffed shot into his own net.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Boro responded well and saw Blind smash a rushed clearance into his own goal after Kike's effort had come of the post. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, the celebrations were cut short as the linesman's flag had gone up and stayed up for the initial effort.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What it did do was raise the temperature of the game and United were indebted to Romero who turned Leadbitter's arrowed near-post shot around the post, before also denying Downing late on.</div>

Brazilian Roberto Firmino offered an inventive cameo to suggest the £29m attacker will have an increasing role to play over the coming weeks, while Hungarian goalkeeper Adam Bogdan produced a series of excellent saves from the first minute until last.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The sight of Matt Ritchie bursting through Liverpool’s defence in the final seconds of added time and forcing Bogdan to save low down brought the obligatory late bout of anxiety, but for once there was no sting in the tail.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There was optimism when Bournemouth visited back in August and expectation upon their return. In between, Liverpool had won just once inside 90-minutes and changed their manager following a start which made advancing in the competition all the more important.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The average age of Klopp’s starting line-up was a little more than 24 years with right-back Connor Randall, who turned 20 last week, and midfielder Cameron Brannagan, 19, making their first starts for the club.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
They performed adeptly, snapping into tackles and offering composure in their distribution. If, as Klopp insists, he is not swayed by reputation then another full debutant, Teixeira, will have boosted his cause.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Portuguese starlet, 22, appeared as a substitute against Fulham in February 2014 when a title challenge was in its formative stages, but suffered a broken leg while on loan at Brighton last term and was considered by Bournemouth in the summer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
He was one embraced by Klopp at the end and deserved his moment having been instrumental in what proved the winning goal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A move which started when Kolo Toure hacked a clearance up-field garnered momentum as Divock Origi left Charlie Daniels trailing in his slipstream and then proceeded to set pulses racing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A pass inside picked out Firmino, who conjured a perfectly-weighted ball to find Teixeira’s burst into the penalty area and put him in a duel with Bournemouth goalkeeper Adam Federici.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Teixeira won hands down, producing an impudent back-heel few would have contemplated and which looked likely to bring him an audacious goal until Adam Smith smuggled the ball from off the goal-line.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yet his clearance went straight to Clyne and he steered the ball into an unguarded net for his first Liverpool goal. It was perhaps indicative of Bournemouth’s luck that there was no reprieve, the mood anchored further by the reflexes of Bogdan who proved impregnable as Junior Stanislas, in particular, discovered.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then a header was tipped over the bar before a free-kick aimed from wide on Bournemouth’s left was beaten away.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While there was a better tempo to Liverpool’s play, the visitors contributed to that by looking to attack themselves, there remained no second goal. Firmino, whose first-half nutmeg on Ritchie was a delight, will have been disappointed not to have extended the lead after 58 minutes.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Marc Pugh thought he had time on the ball 10-yards outside his penalty area, but did not see Firmino pouncing from the shadows and striding forward. A shot from just inside the area was dragged just across the face of the diving Federici’s goal.</div>

A name like that is difficult to forget and it was certainly on the lips of every Manchester City fan last night after the 19-year-old Nigerian striker’s impressive first senior start in this Capital One Cup romp.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Iheanacho set up City’s second goal for Kevin De Bruyne in the first half and added the third himself after De Bruyne had returned the compliment in the second half.</div>

Palace will be sick of the sight of Iheanacho because he came on as a substitute to score a last-gasp winner at Selhurst Park last month. And Palace’s exit means London will have no representatives in the last eight.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The victory came at a cost for City, however, with Pablo Zabaleta carried off with what looked a serious knee injury.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Both teams made six changes from the weekend with each manager giving a young striker a chance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For City, Iheanacho was handed his first start after some impressive cameos as a substitute, and Patrick Bamford made only his second start for Palace since starting a loan spell from Chelsea.</div>

Palace had a good opening themselves when Wilfried Zaha cut the ball back to Joe Ledley.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His shot was deflected into the path of Yanick Bolasie but the effort was smothered by Willy Cabellero, no doubt anxious to make amends for a nightmare in his only previous outing this season, the 4-1 defeat at Tottenham.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bolasie and Zabaleta both needed to be bandaged after a painful clash of heads but they were able to continue after treatment.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The delay seemed to affect Palace because moments after the restart they lost their defensive concentration.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bony stole a yard on his marker Adrian Mariappa to power home a header from Aleksandar Kolarov’s outswinging corner. The header was so powerful that Jordan Mutch, standing on the line, could not keep the ball out.</div>

Bony squandered two chances to increase their lead but it was De Bruyne who continued his hot streak since joining the club by making it 2-0 just before half-time. It was a simple tap-in at the far post after being set up by Iheanacho’s unselfish pass.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bony’s mixed night continued when he spooned a good chance over the bar after a great run by Iheanacho had opened up Palace. City made the game safe just before the hour when Iheanacho marked a promising full debut with the third goal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
De Bruyne turned the ball back from the byline and Bony's dummy wrong-footed the Palace defence. Iheanacho had time to take a touch before rifling a shot home from 10 yards.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To their credit, Palace kept plugging away. Zaha slipped over as he looked set for a consolation and Bamford's shot was blocked by Cabellero. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yaya Toure, skipper for the night, added the fourth form the penalty spot after Delaney wrestled Eliaquim Mangala to the ground as they tussled to reach a corner. Delaney then made sure Palace got on the socresheet but Garcia applied the final touches to an overwhelming win. </div>

<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
It has seemed that making history was clearly not a priority for Hull manager Steve Bruce. He knew a victory would take them past the fourth round of this competition for the first time in their history.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
But, even with Wembley looming closer, he chose to rest all but three of the team that lifted them to second in the Championship with a win over Birmingham last Saturday - and his gamble paid off.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
At least he went two better than Leicester's Claudio Ranieri, who warned he would rest virtually all his first choice players and was as good as his word as only Marc Albrighton survived from their win over Crystal Palace.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Even without Vardy, they created a chance inside 20 seconds when Andrej Kramaric powered a shot inches past the post from nearly 30 yards, but it was to be their only threat of the first-half as the focus switched to Ranieri's defence.</div>

<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The fringe players in front of keeper Mark Schwarzer soon looked vulnerable as a slick three-man passing move finished with Mo Diame setting up Greg Luer with a close-range chance that he could only strike against full-back Ritchie de Laet.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
They were exposed again in the 11th minute when indecision allowed a cross to reach Shaun Maloney, who dragged his shot wide of the post.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
With Tom Huddlestone and Isaac Hayden running affairs in midfield, Hull went on to control the rest of the half, yet created only one more opportunity when Maloney stepped over Andy Robertson's cross to leave Diame with time and space for a shot that he hurriedly mishit over the bar.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Diame, a man with a point to prove to Bruce after being left out of the last two league games, produced a more convincing case for a recall 12 minutes after the restart when he almost caught Schwarzer by surprise with a low shot that shaved a post.</div>

Diame was impressive again two minutes later when he reached the byline and crossed to the far post where Ryan Taylor directed his header narrowly off-target. Leicester, meanwhile, were strictly second-best in every area of the pitch.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
And, while Ranieri was keen to rest Vardy, the Foxes' fans were chanting for "England's No.1" with a only an hour gone and, five minutes later, the striker went on in place of Shinji Okazaki.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
Vardy livened up Leicester, but Hull continued to look far more dangerous. Maguire claimed in vain that a header had crossed and, in extra time, Abel Hernandez demanded a penalty when he went down inside the area - but the substitute was booked for diving.</div>
<div class="storycopy" style="text-align: justify;">
The goals finally arrived from Mahrez and Hernandez, but, in the end, it needed a penalty shoot-out to settle the tie.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Everton players celebrate progressing through to the quarter-finals of the League Cup</td></tr>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
EVERTON'S record in the League Cup has become such a tale of under-achievement and missed opportunities that it seems they no longer know how to accomplish the straight-forward.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Roberto Martinez witnessed his side flirt with elimination for the third successive tie in this term’s competition before finally progressing to the quarter-finals for the first time since 2008 by virtue of penalties.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Joel Robles emerged as Everton’s hero, thwarting Wes Hoolahan from 12-yards, and then seeing Nathan Redmond miss the target, to apply another layer of polish on what had been an impressive personal display.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Spanish goalkeeper’s performance may have offered a reminder to Martinez that he possesses an able alternative to the jittery Tim Howard, but there appears to be no dilemma.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Robles will return to the substitutes’ bench against Sunderland on Sunday with his manager unequivocal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“It's very clear (Tim will come back in),” said Martinez. “Joel has been playing in this competition and I trust him 100pc and the same way Tim Howard is a very, very influential member of our squad.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
 </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Nothing changes. Of course, we want to be better in terms of keeping clean sheets but it’s very easy and soft to look at the last man standing in the goal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“Tim has incredible standards and he can't be happy with the goals we conceded at the weekend. But there's not even a doubt in terms of Tim Howard starting at the weekend.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The win halted a run of four shoot-out defeats at Goodison Park, dating back to 1970 when Borussia Monchengladbach were defeated by a similar 4-3 margin with one of the Everton’s scorers Howard Kendall.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A giant picture of Kendall adorned the outside of the Main Stand, a striking show of respect to the former player and manager whose funeral takes place on Thursday.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And the fact that last of the two titles Kendall won was secured at Norwich in 1987 merely brought into focus how Everton do not make life easy for themselves as they bid to reprise former glories.</div>
