THE modern Frisbee, as we now know it, first went into production on January 13, 1957.

 

The first frisbee was created in 1957

 

1. It is not clear who came up with the idea of a flying disc, but the credit is usually given to Los Angeles building inspector Walter Morrison.

2. It is said to have begun with Morrison and his wife flinging pie tins to one another on the beach.

3. The tins had the words Frisbie’s Pies (from the Frisbie Baking Company) embossed on them.

4. Morrison and his partner Warren Frascioni launched an improved plastic version of the pie tins which they sold as the Pluto Platter.

5. Morrison was awarded a patent for the design which he sold to the Wham-O company who renamed it a Frisbee.

6. The sport of disc golf, in which Frisbees are thrown at targets, was invented in the early 1960s.

7. The official world record for throwing and catching a flying disc is 263.20 metres (863ft 6in).

8. In 2004 the journal Psychological Science published a paper with the title How Dogs Navigate To Catch Frisbees.

9. In 1968, the US Navy spent around $400,000 studying the motion of Frisbees in wind tunnels.
