MICHAEL OWEN believes Manchester United have been overtaken by neighbours Manchester City in the footballing pecking order.

Ex-Man Utd star admits rivals Man City are better club amid Old Trafford struggles
Michael Owen scored 17 goals in 52 games in all competitions for Manchester United

The former Liverpool and United goalscorer enjoyed a three-year spell at Old Trafford in the latter stages of his career under the guidance of legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson.
However, times have changed dramatically since and with Louis van Gaal at the helm United are a club close to turmoil by their standards.
United sit fifth in the Premier League after 24 games played, with five points separating them and a spot in the top four.

Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini's second-placed City are still targeting a quadruple this season, with a place in the Capital One Cup final secured, and Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup success all possible.
The official appointment of Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola as City boss from next season highlights the ambition at the Etihad, especially having pipped United to the ex-Barcelona man.
As a result, Owen feels the United team needs an overhaul in the transfer window to help them regain their top status in Manchester.
“I think they’re (City) a bit ahead of Man United at the moment,” Owen admitted about his former club.
“Players wise, forget who’s in charge, Manchester United are struggling.
“Manchester United need to do a lot of surgery to their team.”
Speculation continues to surround Van Gaal’s future at the club with Jose Mourinho reportedly in talks with the club to take over, showing the discontent at Old Trafford.
