BRITONS are becoming a generation of hoarders and have stashed away phones worth around £13billion at home, a new survey has revealed.
The new study shows that 45 to 55-year-olds are the biggest phone hoarders with a quarter stockpiling four or more phones at home.
It also revealed that there is a potential gold mine of £13.27 billion worth of old phones in stashed around people's homes.
Belfast is home to the biggest phone hoarders, followed by Cardiff and Newcastle.
But those from Norwich have the fewest unused phones at home, followed by Southampton and Plymouth.
The research also revealed that London is the best city for mobile phone recyclers – with Londoners trading-in more phones than anywhere else in the UK.
However it found that mobile phone trade-ins have rocketed since Christmas, jumping up 50 per cent in the last month alone.
The research from the mobile phone price comparison recycling site, SellMyMobile.com, shows that the average Brit has more than two unused phones at home, and 1 in 10 are holding on to five or more old devices.
The firm's founder, Keir McConomy said: "The value of mobile cash in the attic is increasing as people continue to trade-up to get the latest smartphones.
"While not all old devices will be the latest iPhone, if you have a few phones at home they could still be worth a decent amount when added up.
"It's very easy to convert your old clutter into cash, so there's no point sitting on phones if you're not using them, as the value only depreciates over time.
"All good recyclers now provide instructions on how to quickly backup and wipe data from old handsets, so you can be confident your phone is being sold on safely."
The average phone now recycled through SellMyMoble.com fetches £126 – an increase of 12 per cent over the same time last year.
And a two and a half year old used iPhone 5S 64G50B is currently worth up to £160 while a Samsung Galaxy S5 can be resold for up to £139.
