NEWCASTLE have agreed a £12million fee for Tottenham winger Andros Townsend.
Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had been demanding £14m for the player but manager Mauricio Pochettino stepped in to accept the bid which Levy then ageed to.
The Argentinian boss is keen to free up space in his squad as Tottenham push for Champions League football and a possible title bid.
Townsend has not appeared for the first team since October 22 and was dropped from the squad after a spat with fitness coach Nathan Gardiner.
The 24-year-old has since been restricted to playing for the under-21 side and may need time to re-adjust to the rigours of Premier League football.
News News Blog Sport understands Townsend is likely to sign a five-and-a-half-year deal and will likely complete the move in the next 48 hours.
When he does eventually agree personal terms, Townsend will become Steve McClaren's third signing of the January transfer window with Henri Saivet (£5m) and Jonjo Shelvey (£12m) both already have sealed moves as Mike Ashley desperately tries to stave off relegation.
With next year's TV sponsorship deal reaching record levels, it would be a particularly bad season for Newcastle to endure the drop but they are currently two points from safety sitting 18th in the Premier League table.
