ASTON VILLA are staring relegation in the face following their appalling start to the season.

The five worst ever Premier League teams revealed (could Aston Villa join them?)
This current Aston Villa team is potentially one of the worst in Premier League history

They have just seven points from 17 league games and sit rock bottom of the table at Christmas.
Their 1-0 win at Bournemouth on the opening day of the season was their last in the Premier League and their awful run of form led to the sacking of Tim Sherwood at the end of October.
New French boss Remi Garde is the man tasked with saving Villa from certain relegation and with no win in 16 and a collection of players bereft of any confidence, prospects look grim at Villa Park.

The goals of France striker Loic Remy could not save QPR

QPR 2012/13 - 25 points
QPR finished bottom of the Premier League having won just four games all season. They were hammered 5-0 at home by Swansea City on the opening day and it set the tone for a dismal campaign.
Millions were spent on new signings and their wages but neither Mark Hughes - sacked in November after 12 games - nor Harry Redknapp could effectively mix together QPR’s individual talents into a coherent unit.
There were staggering reports of astronomical wages paid to the likes of Loic Remy and Christopher Samba, who both signed in the January window, but neither could improve a team that was never settled throughout the season, given the huge turnover of players from the previous year.
QPR were relegated with fellow strugglers Reading after a 0-0 draw at the Madejski Stadium with three game still to play and they finished 14 points behind 17th placed Sunderland.

Iceland defender Hermann Hreidarsson was a reliable rock at the back but Pompey were still relegated

Portsmouth 2009/10 - 19 points
Pompey were doomed from the start when their catastrophic financial situation revealed the club had been overspending massively on players and their wages in previous Premier League campaigns.
Club staff were unpaid, players were unpaid and turmoil behind the scenes with their estranged owner Ali al-Faraj translated directly to results on the pitch.
They were bottom at Christmas with just four wins and had only won seven by the time the season was over. They entered administration in February and were docked nine points by the Premier League.
Their run to the FA Cup final brought pride back into the club, crippled by its dire financial straits, and Portsmouth fans will never forget that semi-final at Wembley, where Pompey beat Tottenham 2-0, managed by their former boss Harry Redknapp.
Now the club finds themselves in League Two and this year was the beginning of their drop down the divisions. They were 16 points from safety when the season finished in May.

Derby's record still stands as the worst ever in the Premier League

Derby County 2007/08 - 11 points
The worst Premier League season ever. Derby County were sent swiftly back down to the Championship with their tails between their legs.
Billy Davies guided the Rams back to the top flight after a five-year absence by beating West Brom 1-0 in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in 2007 but the campaign that followed will go down as the worst ever.
They won one match, beating Newcastle 1-0 at Pride Park in September thanks to a Kenny Miller screamer, but that was it. They drew eight and lost 29, conceding 89 goals and scoring just 20.
Davies was sacked in November and replaced with Paul Jewell, who had masterminded two great escapes with Bradford City in 2000 and Wigan in 2007, but he was helpless to prevent their inevitable relegation.
The 11 points Derby accumulated still stands as the lowest points total in Premier League history and they were 25 points adrift of safety.

Striker Jon Stead only scored once for Sunderland in the Premier League

Sunderland 2005/06 - 15 points
The Black Cats set the old record for the lowest points total with their shocking season a decade ago.
Sunderland charged to the Championship title in 2005 with 94 points and finished as champions under the stewardship of former Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy.
They lost their first five games, went unbeaten for three including a 2-0 win at Middlesbrough, before losing 12 of their next 13 matches. McCarthy was sacked in Ferbruary and Kevin Ball was caretaker manager for the rest of the season as the club slumped to a new Premier League lows.
Sunderland spent £1.1million on Andy Gray and a further £1.8million on Jon Stead. Both strikers scored a goal each that season, with Stead’s solitary strike coming in a 2-2 draw at Everton, on April Fools’ Day.
With just three wins and six draws to their name, the Black Cats were sent straight back down a full 23 points behind Portsmouth in 17th.

Watford were sent straight back down to the old Division One after back to back to promotions

Watford 1999/00 - 24 points
Legendary Watford boss Graham Taylor had guided the Hornets to back to back promotions as they took their place in the Premier League for the first time in 1999.
There were signs of early promise with wins over Liverpool and Chelsea but after September, they only managed three more wins.
Their sudden rise up the divisions caught up with them and their points total was the lowest ever in Premier League history at the time.
Watford had two winless spells of three months during the season and finished 12 points from safety behind Bradford in 17th, who stayed up on the final day finishing with 36 points.
