Garry Monk insists he will not walk away from Swansea |
GARRY MONK admits he is at a loss to explain the wretched run of results which has left the Swansea manager on the brink of being sacked.
This humiliating home reverse against in-form Leicester means the Swans have claimed just one win from 11 Premier League games, picking up only six points from a possible 33 to lie two clear of the relegation zone.
Chairman Huw Jenkins and the rest of the board have been desperate to stand by a man who has given the club 12 years of loyal service, and guided them to a best Premier League finish of eighth just last term.
That achievement won the 36-year-old a new three-year contract, but he is not expected to be in charge for the daunting trip to Manchester City next Saturday as the Liberty Stadium hierarchy accept action is necessary if they are to avoid falling out of the top-flight just as the new TV riches filter in.
David Moyes has been linked with the role, but Swansea are thought to be weighing up several options and are keen on appointing a man who fits their passing philosophy, something the former Everton and Manchester United manager's sides were hardly renowned for.
Rangers boss Mark Warburton is among the leading names on the shortlist to replace Monk, while sources at Swansea have not ruled out a sensational move to bring former boss Brendan Rodgers back to south Wales in the wake of his departure from Liverpool.
For his part Monk insisted he will not walk away from his job, he is in line for a pay-off of around £3.5million should he be sacked, but does not know what more he can do to improve fortunes.
"Those of you who know me will know I will never walk away, never. No one knows the principles of the club more than myself and no one will fight harder than myself," he said.
"Of course I am worried. It is not a good situation that we are in. We are in a situation where people need to step up to the plate now.
"It is so frustrating. I don't know what more I can do. I am trying to find all the ways to make it better and produce and this is very frustrating."
While the focus will be on Monk's future, several of his players could hardly have been accused of giving their all to keep him in a job. Bafetimbi Gomis was lethargy personified, while Ki Sung-yueng, Kyle Bartley and Kyle Naughton were hopelessly off-colour.
Not that Leicester cared as they soared to the top of the Premier League, and they didn't even need the help of Jamie Vardy to do so as winger Riyad Mahrez scored a superb hat-trick.
"Teams fear us going forward," said winger Marc Albrighton. "We know that we have got that security. We will obviously do our best to keep clean sheets but if we can't keep a clean sheet then we will go up the other end and score.
"If Riyad and Jamie keep scoring the goals it will play a massive part in where we end up this season."
