GRAHAM POLL believes Jose Mourinho has been the victim of "harsh" treatment from the FA and thinks they should take a different approach next time he steps out of line.
The Chelsea manager was charged with misconduct, handed a £40,000 fine and a one-match stadium ban for criticising referee Jon Moss at half-time during their 2-1 defeat to West Ham at Upton Park last month.
Mourinho was not on the bench or able to take charge of the 1-0 loss at Stoke on Saturday as a result.
And Poll, a top referee himself in his time, thinks the sanctions were over the top.
He also expressed concerns that simply slapping the Portuguese with a ban will not act as a future deterrent and fears it won't stop him from acting out again in the future.
"The FA stadium ban is harsh," Poll told bwin.
"I would favour a more proactive approach because the ban is served and then exactly the same thing happens again.
"What exactly this proactive approach looks like, I’m not too sure – but we need to have something that educates and mitigates against human error."
