RONALD DE BOER reckons Memphis Depay will come good if he is given time at Manchester United.
The 21-year-old made a promising start to his Old Trafford career following his £19.25million move from PSV Eindhoven in the summer.
But he has failed to maintain his early season form with Louis Van Gaal choosing not to start him in the Premier League since the 3-0 defeat to Arsenal on October 4.
Depay has had his attitude questioned by Netherlands boss Danny Blind and there are already doubts over whether he will ever be able to live up to United’s famous No.7 shirt.
But like Denis Irwin, De Boer admires the Dutch attacking midfielder and wants to see him flourish for the Red Devils.
"It is always difficult to come to a bigger team but it is also a different country, a different league, higher expectations and the boy is just 21 years old," he told talkSPORT.
"You need time to adjust. It takes time. We have to be patient because I still believe he has the exceptional qualities to make it for Man United."
Depay could be set for a return to Van Gaal's starting line-up against Watford tomorrow due to the loss of Wayne Rooney, Anthony Martial and Marouane Fellaini up-front.
