PROSECUTORS in Brazil have called for Edilson to be charged over his alleged involvement in a big lottery fraud scheme, according to reports.
The 45-year-old, who was a part of Brazil’s 2002 World Cup winning squad, was detained in September by police on suspicion of helping a gang produce false winning lottery tickets.
Edilson at the time categorically denied allegations of fraud, corruption, falsifying documents and money-laundering.
The criminal gang, which operated across the country, allegedly helped create the syndicates before the prize money was then paid into bogus accounts.
Police claim the alleged gang handled vast amounts of money to carry out the scam.
Investigators have claimed that Edilson used his fame as a vehicle to try and get backing from bank managers to endorse the scheme.
The alleged gang were also thought to have targeted Brazil’s state bank, Caixa Economica Federal.
Edilson, who was dubbed the ‘Little Devil’ for his dribbling skills, played alongside Ronaldo, Romario and Edmundo.
He also played for Portuguese giants Benfica before hanging up his boots in 2010.
