Arsenal had to be patient, but ended up producing some of their best football of the season |
MEZUT OZIL led a classy second-half display from Arsenal as they overcame a stubborn Watford side at Vicarage Road to go second in the Premier League table.
The Gunners knew they had to win to keep the gap to Man City to just two points, while Watford had the chance to move into the top half.
Despite the apparent gulf in class between the two sides, Watford came out fired up and hassled Arsenal from the very first whistle.
But the Gunners produced the better chances of the first half, Aaron Ramsey twice going close, once denied by Heurelho Gomes, and once blazing over the bar.
At the other end, Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney proved a handful, and Petr Cech was almost caught out coming out of his box, but referee Mike Jones decided he hadn't handled beyond the area.
If the first half was frantic, the second was more reserved, and two Arsenal goals in four minutes put the game beyond Watford.
Just after the hour mark, with the home side still appealing for a foul at the other end, Mesut Ozil seemed to be impeded, but it didn't matter as the ball fell to Sanchez who stroked it home.

It was 2-0 soon after, Ozil again pulling the ball back to find Olivier Giroud - only just on the pitch for Theo Walcott - to lash the ball into the roof of the net.
All of a sudden the Gunners were in control of a match that they'd been troubled in for long periods, but Aaron Ramsey's first Arsenal goal of the season gave the scoreline an unfair tinge with 16 minutes to go.
