Wayne Rooney equalled Bobby Charlton's scoring record |
NEWS NEWS BLOG SPORT brings you the player ratings from England's 6-0 win over San Marino.
JOE HART 6
On a difficult, bobby surface when the ball could do anything, Hart will be grateful San Marino could not so much as muster a half-shot between them.
NATHANIEL CLYNE 6
Looked eager to get involved at right back secure in the knowledge his pace meant the England right flank was never going to look exposed.
JOHN STONES 7
May not have got his Chelsea move but seemed to hold himself taller and straighter as if showing off his price tag. Will face tougher tests, of course.
PHIL JAGIELKA 6
His industry and watchfulness made sure England never got too gung-ho and he linked tidily with Shelvey whenever the Swansea man came deep.
LUKE SHAW 7
Great cross for the second (own) goal and had the wit to go beyond Barkley on regular occasions to try to get something going on the left flank.
JAMES MILNER 6
Busy and enthusiastic, but his set-pieces lacked any real venom and his reluctance to beat his man kept England playing in front of the defence.
JONJO SHELVEY 9
He looked to play intelligent, aggressive passes into the players in front of him without trying the ridiculous. Clearly enjoyed his return to the fold.
ROSS BARKLEY 8
Patches at the end of the first half when he burst to line and stooped to head in as soon as the second was underway. Improved with time.
ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN 6
His role is to beat his man and wreak havoc but he only did it right at the start of the second half when he provided the cross for third.
WAYNE ROONEY 7
Was never going to miss the penalty to equal Charlton’s record and stung the hands of the keeper with a chance to beat it. Maybe next time for the 50?
JAMIE VARDY 5
Just four years ago he was playing in the Conference so perhaps he should have been more at home here. Did nothing to seize his chance.
SUBS
HARRY KANE (for Rooney 61) 7
Ended a drought drier than the San Marino pitch with a cool chip over the goalkeeper. Maybe could even have had one more.
FABIAN DELPH (for Milner 61) 7
Added the impetus Milner lacked and was instrumental in creating Walcott’s goal. Seems to enjoy the international stage.
THEO WALCOTT (for Oxlade-Chamberlain 67) 8
If you don’t want to be thought of as an impact player, don’t score within a minute of coming on. Took full advantage of tired legs with some late goals.
