Newcastle outcast Siem de Jong set for return against West Ham
STEVE MCCLAREN is considering turning to Newcastle outcast Siem de Jong in a desperate search for goals.
The Magpies have only scored twice this season and have had just six shots on target - averaging a division-low 5.3 efforts per game - convincing McClaren to to turn to the Dutchman in a bid to add greater threat to his attack, according to the Chronicle.
De Jong has played just 163 minutes of Premier League football in 13 months since his £6 million move from dutch outfit Ajax, but with Aleksandar Mitrovic suspended and Papiss Cisse and Ayoze Perez misfiring, McClaren is in need of a different dimension to his side's attack.
The Dutch international himself, who made just one appearance for Newcastle last season due to injury, admits he is keen to return from the 'shadows' to help spark his side back into life. “I lived last season in the shadows," he told Dutch media. “Last season I was often alone. My team-mates worked hard but I had a very different schedule.”Newcastle currently find themselves in the relegation zone after picking up just two points from their opening four games and McClaren is keen to bring the attacker into the fold against West Ham as he prays such a gamble will see his side score their first goal in 312 minutes of football.
