Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is out for two months after breaking his right foot in training |
LIVERPOOL boss Brendan Rodgers who is coming under increasing pressure will have his reign reviewed by the club's owners in November.
And in another body blow to the Ulsterman skipper Jordan Henderson is facing a two month absence after breaking his right foot in a training ground accident on Friday.
The England midfielder who will also miss the rest of his country's European Championship campaign in addition to the two prestige friendlies against Spain and France has already missed a month with an unrelated heel problem.
Henderson will have surgery tomorrow - less than 24 hours after a critical game against Norwich.
Anfield's USA based hierarchy don't want to pull the plug on Rodgers, the man they went for following Kenny Dalglish's sacking but they know the Ulsterman's critics are growing.
They feel that assessing the club's progress - or lack of it - in November offers Rodgers a fair deal, especially after coming so close to landing the league title for the first time since 1990 only 16 months ago.
But with many high profile pundits - some of them with Liverpool connections - questioning the direction of the club under Rodgers, along with some fans, he knows he can't afford a repeat of the last home game - a 3-0 defeat against West Ham.
Another crushing loss against Norwich on Merseyside today would bring the knives out and could force the owners' hand sooner than they anticipated.
They know that there are two outstanding out of work candidates to replace Rodgers if they had to pull the plug.
Former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp has expressed an interest in managing in the Premier League while former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has his admirers within Anfield.
Former Liverpool star Didi Hamann said last week that Klopp "would be a great fit for Liverpool" while ex striker John Aldridge insists that the club has lost its identity. He added: "Brendan's not daft he knows a manager lives and dies by results."
BBC pundit and another former Liverpool legend Mark Lawrenson stated: "I suspect a lot of Liverpool fans aren't really sure where this team is going."
It all adds to the pressure on Rodgers but so far his job is safe at least until November - unless there are set backs in the next two home games against Norwich and Aston Villa.
