Wayne Rooney celebrating scoring his record-breaking 50th England goal against Switzerland |
ON a night where Wayne Rooney became England's all-time top goalscorer at Wembley, here are the the ratings outlining how Roy Hodgson's men got on.
England (4-3-3)
Joe Hart: Fine save to plunge at feet of Xherdan Shaqiri early on to save when Swiss forward clean through. Also a fine reaction save from Valon Behrami. Assured and confident. 7
Nathaniel Clyne: England's fullbacks both pushed forward hard, and Clyne supported Oxlade-Chamberlain well. But looked shaky on the ball though, and caught out of position too often. 6
Gary Cahill: Played in mask to protect broken nose. Steady as usual. But seems to lack confidence after poor start to club season. Did not make any errors, or really inspire. 6
Gary Cahill: Played in mask to protect broken nose. Steady as usual. But seems to lack confidence after poor start to club season. Did not make any errors, or really inspire. 6
Chris Smalling: Solid and determined. Looked calm and confident, as he put down a marker as a challenger to John Stones in the centre of defence. Hunted the ball down well. Booked. 7
Luke Shaw: Got forward well early on. Constantly on edge of the Swiss area. But like Clyne, got caught in possession too often. Did not get enough crosses in. 6
James Milner: Switched to the left when Delph went off. As ever, utterly reliable. Great ball to put Rooney through early on. Then forced a save from Rooney pass. Unluckily booked. 7
Jonjo Shelvey: Got another chance in the England engine room after an impressive showing in San Marino. Broke up play and used the ball well early on - but then dived in unwisely couple of times. Faded badly . (Sub for Kane 57 mins). 6
Fabian Delph: Within a minute of the start of the game, stretched for a ball and his hamstring went. Hugely unlucky for the Manchester City midfielder. 6
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain: Got forward well, but struggled to get crosses in as Swiss defended in numbers. Livelier in second half but still did not do enough. Disappointing. 6
Wayne Rooney: Early chance missed from Gary Cahill header and slid another shot just wide. But he beat Sir Bobby Charlton’s record with his 50th goal with a penalty. 8
Raheem Sterling: Worked hard all night, tackling back. Used pace well but tended to overdo it on the ball. But he won the penalty that enabled Rooney to make history. 7
Subs: Ross Barkley (On for Delph 3 mins): Struggled to make an impact after coming on. Brighter in second half better as linked up with Rooney. But unconvincing. 6
Harry Kane (On for Shelvey 57 mins): Brought on to give Rooney support up front and made an instant impact with only second touch - as he rammed home Shaw's cross. 8
John Stones (on for Clyne 67 mins): Dropped in to right back to replace Clyne. Had little chance to shine. 6
Switzerland (4-3-3): Sommer 6; Lichsteiner 6, Klose 6, Schar 6, Rodriguez 5; Xhaka 6, Inler 7, Behrami 7; Shaqiri 7, Drmic 7 (Embolo 62 6), Stocker 6 (Seferovic 71 6).
Referee: Gianluca Rocchi (Italy).
Stat of the game: Roy Hodgson's England, as they head into the Euro 2016 finals, have now won their last eight competitive fixtures at Wembley, scoring 28 goals in the process. Switzerland have not kept a clean sheet against England since September 1977.
