Owner Omar Von Muller, who saved the pup from the dog pound, has said that the decision to end his dog's life was incredibly difficult.
As well as starring in 2012 Oscar winning film The Artist, Uggie also starred in 2011 movie Water For Elephants, starring Robert Pattinson.
Uggie's owner announced that the animal would be retiring from the movie world three years ago, confirming the news at the 2012 Oscars.
Omar explained: "Everybody thinks I am a great trainer.
"I don't think so. I think he is just a great dog."
Sarah Clifford, who was one of Uggie's trainers, paid tribute to the "perfect terrier".
She said: "I will forever hold him dearly in my heart and never forget his infinite love for chicken and hotdogs."
After his movie retirement, Uggie landed a role as 'spokesdog' for the animal rights organisation's Pets of Valor Awards, which honours rescue dogs and cats for their random acts of heroism.
His owner said at the time: "Uggie's honoured to have been chosen by The Humane Society of the United States to be spokesdog for The Pets of Valor Award, although he did hesitate at first when he heard that cats were to be included, but now he likes the idea of having an excuse to bark for them, instead of at them."
